He arrived the next afternoon with four fifty-dollar notes folded in his pocket, alongside two passport-sized photos of himself. He’d paid for the photos at a camera store, and tried not to think about how expensive the whole exercise was becoming. Tommy loitered near the counter, waiting for a chance to pass the money and photos to Josh, but the opportunity didn’t arise: Dave was hovering, it was student night and The Hole was busy. Nobody drank like university students getting a two-for-one. On these nights, Tommy preferred being out on the floor around people his own age. He couldn’t help but think that if the circumstances had been different, he might have been one of them, living in a student dorm instead of a backpacker dorm, and going for cheap drinks at The Hole instead of wiping up the cheap drinks when they were knocked over. There was also a small part of him that wondered what he’d do if he spied Carey Price in the crowd, just one of the many pretty girls in short dresses with straightened hair, dressed up for a night out.

He kept looking, but there was no Carey Price.

When the last of the student crowd cleared out at around midnight in search of a dance floor, Tommy was finally able to give Josh the money and photos. Josh pocketed the cash but paused to chuckle at the pictures.

‘What?’ asked Tommy.

‘You look like you’ve got the shits!’ replied Josh. ‘Perfect for an ID.’ He told Tommy he’d pass them along to his friend, and with a bit of luck he should have a driver’s licence in Tommy’s name within a week. ‘And he’ll put a nice long expiry on it too. Should be good for the next five years at least. Just do me a favour, and don’t actually use it to drive a car.’
